“Starmen – The Best of David Bowie and The Police”
The musical stars will be blazing across the Eastern Cape sky as Centrestage pays combined tribute to two of the biggest musical influencers of the seventies and eighties, in a show entitled ‘Starmen – The Best of David Bowie and The Police”.
The show is scheduled to take place at Old Grey on 9, 11 and 12 March 2016.
Following on from the tragic death of the flamboyant Ziggy Stardust alter ego, showman extraordinaire Cedric Vandenschrik has been imported to emulate the outlandish Bowie in front of the Centrestage band.
The punk, reggae and jazz influences of late 1970’s phenomenon ‘The Police’ will intersperse the evening as Wayne Kallis pays tribute to his own personal icon, Sting.
The band also consists of Police stalwart Gino Fabbri on drums, Alan Kozak on lead guitar, Andrew Warneke on bass and Deborah Everard on keys.
“Bowie was the rebel, the star man, Major tom, the one that went further and pushed the boundaries of what was acceptable musically and visually”, says long-time fan Vandenschrik.
“With intensity and verve he tackled a wide variety of musical styles always sporting that integrity that is the common thread of the great frontmen of his generation”.
“There was no one quite like David Bowie”, he continued “from his voice to his stage presence to his songwriting. His legacy has, and will continue to inspire artists all over the universe”.
Says Fabbri “As a drummer, Stuart Copeland of The Police was a major influence on my own playing. He was punk meets reggae with boundless energy, like a caged animal behind the kit, yet he still had such an ear for the light and shade which is so evident in the Police sound.”
“The space between the notes…he forged his own path and style – clean, but meaty – I love it!!” enthused Fabbri.
“The music of the Police has been omnipresent since I was a child”, says musical director Wayne Kallis.
“As I get older, I understand and enjoy it more and more. It’s some of my favourite music now – imagine how much more I will enjoy it when I am 80!” he continued.
Bowie fans can look forward to hits such as Space Oddity (Major Tom), Starman, Changes, Heroes, China Girl, Ziggy Stardust, Life on Mars, Dancing in the Street, Under Pressure, Life on Mars and Let’s Dance, amongst others.
Police pundits will enjoy Wrapped Around Your Finger, Roxanne, Message in a Bottle, Walking on the Moon, Don’t Stand So Close to Me, Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic, Can’t Stand Losing You, Every Breath You Take, So Lonely, and others, along with Sting favourites such as Englishman in New York, If I Ever Lose My Faith in You and When We Dance.
