the shows
Centrestage and AlgoaFM invite you to let your inner 80’s out as they celebrate the 35th anniversary of 1984 with 80 favourite 80's hits in The Real 80’s dance party, taking place in East London at the Guild Theatre from 8 to 10 August and in Port Elizabeth at the Boardwalk ICC on 23 August and 30/31 August at the Boardwalk Underground 80’s Club.
Featuring Gino Fabbri, Wayne Kallis, Tara-Jane Stern, Thuba Myeki, James Smith, Hugo Kleinhans and introducing Tarryn Light, the show challenges audiences to ‘Party like its 1985’ and features music specially chosen to take audiences back to their youth to the days they celebrated at Numbers in East London, or Lillies, Faces, Village Green, Strawberry Fields, Limelight, Valentinos and the clubs of the then PE 80’s scene.
Instead of the 35 songs featured over the course of an evening, instead this time the Centrestage 7 will cast aside the tiresome 80’s clichés in favour of the songs loved at that time, promising to keep the non-stop 80’s party going by performing no less than 80 songs within 3 hours!
80’s icons featured include the likes of Alphaville, Billy Idol, Blondie, Bronski Beat, Corey Hart, Dead or Alive, Depeche Mode, Erasure, Eurythmics, FR David, Falco, Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Queen, Bon Jovi, Huey Lewis, Kim Wilde, Michael Jackson, Madonna, Cyndi Lauper, Nick Kershaw, Prince, Soft Cell, Styx, Talking Heads, Tears for Fears, The Cure, The Thompson Twins, ‘Til Tuesday, UB40, Wang Chung, Whitney Houston and Yazoo, amongst others.
Songs such as Safety Dance, Take On Me, Don’t Go, Slippery People, Wake Me Up, Big in Japan, Get Down On It, Cruel Summer, Male Stripper, Never Gonna Give You Up, Love Cats, Sunglasses at Night, Voices Carry, Come on Eileen, Blue Monday and Underneath the Radar will also be included in the mix.
Patrons will be able to watch the show or party on the extended dancefloor. Dress-up will be optional and prizes will be given away for best dressed and best dancers each night.
This will be a first for East London’s Guild Theatre, as the main stage itself will act as the dancefloor and tables will also be added to the backstage area to create a cabaret setting. The bar will be open throughout the 3-hour performance, which will run straight through without a break. The East London performances start at 19h30.
Tickets for the VIP tables are available from Computicket and will cost R200 each or R180 for 8 or more, whilst the usual theatre seating will also be available at R160/R140 a ticket.
The Boardwalk shows will include a night at the main Boardwalk International Conference Centre on Friday 23 August, followed by weekend sessions at a special underground 80’s club which will be created in the popular underground parking area on 30 and 31 August. Tickets for these cost R160/R140 for 8 or more and can be purchased through Computicket or by calling Wendy on 082-6616921.
