NUTTY COMEDY COMES TO BARNYARD THEATRE WILLOWBRIDGE IN OCTOBER
(BOOKING DETAILS BELOW)
The spotlight falls squarely on ‘crazy’ as comedian Gino Fabbri brings his celebrated straight-jacket comedy ‘Gino Fabbri is Completely Nuts’ to the Barnyard Theatre Willowbridge on Friday, 16 October 2015. This show comes to Cape Town audiences after receiving positive feedback at a very successful run at the Barnyard Theatre Emperors Palace, Musiekskuur and Cresta in July this year. Rationality is put to the sword as the rubber-faced funnyman steps into the persona of six hilariously unhinged characters to poke fun at our multi-cultural, multi-lingual melting pot society and prove that madness, like stupidity, is an entirely subjective affair!
Eastern Cape born Fabbri, who has delighted corporate audiences around the country with his off-beat character-driven humour, received five star ratings from Durban paper The Mercury’s Billy Suter and Cape Argus’s Theresa Smith, aand brings this delightful comedy to Cape Town.
The show does come with a warning “Beware - this show contains Nuts!”
‘Sanity’ is a word not often associated with Fabbri – or more specifically, with the hair-brained assortment of loony-bin characters with the strangest outlooks on life which he portrays! Completely Nuts has less to do with squirrels and everything to do with the balmy, loopy, half-witted perspectives and shenanigans which Gino’s characters get up to, most of whom turn out to be “about as sharp as a bowling ball”!
Take his traffic officer Helmut Ramspoed for instance, a self-proclaimed superhero of traffic ordinance compliance, who takes his job just a little too seriously to be called mentally stable. The socially inept eccentric German scientist Walter Pilenkompf separates emotions from facts, preferring IQ to EQ as he explains the role of science and mathematics in understanding women, whilst a saga of self-delusion unfolds as pheromone-laden Latin lover Minuto Peniso woos the ladies and shares his unfortunate stories of conquest and virility.
West meets East as the irritating know-it-all oriental Footsa Kionaai (of dubious sexual orientation) explains how China is taking over the world, and meet Indian hustler and businessman Rancid Punjabi, who is particularly adept at putting his foot in his mouth as he unknowingly expresses his internal monologue without considering the social appropriateness there-of. Engage in the small dreams of the “woefully under-endowed in the talent department” dead-pan pop-idol wannabe Ruan Hollywood as he deals with his self-esteem and parental issues whilst playing a buckled toaster with a pair of forks, earnestly sharing the tragi-comic minutia of his small-town trip down the road to fame.
Add to this the self-referencing psychologist, Reginald Snead, who is all too quick to banish the Hippocratic Oath in favour of sharing a good story about one of his patients! The multi-talented Fabbri includes two show-stopping finales in the show. He integrates his drumming skills to take his audience on a musical journey featuring the evolution of drums, showcasing a scintillating medley of the most popular and recognisable drum riffs of all time. He follows this with a roller-coaster ride of 50 different dance styles in 7 minutes!
Gino’s characters share an inability to accurately perceive exactly what is going on around them, all the while trying to compensate for their short-comings. In doing so, hilarious consequences ensue as Fabbri moves from naughty stand-up comedian to quirky singer.
Describing the show as an “antidote to deep thinking”, Fabbri says “Hiding behind the guise of these dysfunctional persona’s grants one an enormous amount of license!”
Madness takes its toll in this mal-adjusted show which will have you rolling in the aisles and may even have you questioning your own lucidity!
“There is no age restriction ... only a money restriction. But don’t worry ... the jokes are free”, he quips.
“My characters let their flaws hang out, oblivious to the fact that we can all see them. Audiences recognize their own shortcomings in these characters – and we are all secretly afraid that our own insecurities are as clearly visible for the world to see!!”
