In one of the most anticipated Centrestage shows in some time , the spotlight falls on the greatest music of the 80’s, the decade which spawned bad hair and outrageous fashion, as Centrestage presents The 80's Glory days at the MMM Loubsher Auditorium from 1-12 September.
The 80’s Glory Days will take you on a nostalgic trip back to your youth, to a decade that blended stadium rock, new wave, electronica and pop metal. With its commercial, catchy hooks and increased pop aesthetic, the era launched a new level of lighters aloft, spandex, and the marriage of guitar and keyboards.
The Centrestage All-Star Band, joined by a the Centrestage Horny brass section, will recreate the most popular bands of this distinctive period as they pay tribute to the likes of Men at Work, Huey Lewis and the News, Duran Duran, Nick Kershaw, The Eurythmics, Wham!
Popular comedian/drummer/front-man Gino Fabbri will take the mickey out of Prince and crazy Talking Heads front-man David Byrne, whilst the frenetically energetic Wayne Kallis will perform as John Cougher Mellencamp, Brian Adams and Bruce Springsteen. The gorgeous Donna Africa will also be on-board to portray Joan Armatrading and the queen of the 80’s, Madonna.
Glory Days will offer a high-paced entertainment party package in the Centrestage tradition.
80’s classics such as Come on Eileen, St Elmos Fire , I Just Died in Your Arms Tonight , Wild Boys , Don’t You Forget about Me , Take On Me, Call Me, Sweet Dreams , I Want to Know What Love is , Cant Fight This Feeling , Who can it be now , Only You , Tainted Love , Road to Nowhere , Like A Virgin, Dancing in the Dark, Jack and Diane , I Won’t Let the Sun Go Down , Time After Time , Thriller & The Whole of the Moon will be included in the mix.
Centrestage has been responsible for a string of hit shows including The Magnificent 7, The Vegas Superstars, the Strictly Partytime series and tributes to Abba, the Beatles, Queen, The Bee Gees, Elvis, Neil Diamond, U2 and the recent Vagabonds of Rock n Roll.
The creation of the 80’s Glory Days show follows repeated calls by Centrestage fans to cover the music of the 80’s.
“For those aged between 36 and 46, this is the music which represented their post-matric years – which is why the show is billed as being ‘the soundtrack to the best time of your life’”, says Centrestage owner Gary Hemmings.
“The band members themselves have never been so enthusiastic about a show – the spirit at rehearsals has been extremely positive, the songs we have chosen represent personal favourites of many of the performers!”
The show features a 12-strong cast, which sees the band joined by 2 new members of the new Escape boyband, Thuba Myeki on vocals and Will Jenson on keyboards.
Musically directed by Donovan Hattingh, with Khanya Matomela also on keyboards and Lani Botha performing as Cyndi Lauper and on backing vocals, the also features Shawn Lyons, Marlon Louis, Greg Bell and Jeoff Taylor on various brass instruments.
In the company of all your favourite 80’s stars and more, including Dexy’s Midnight Runners, Bananarama, Men at Work, Peter Gabriel, Aha, Reo Speedwagon, Michael Jackson, Level 42, Blondie, Foreigner & The Waterboys.
